Core values & culture

The values that make a Checkmate.

While we come from different backgrounds and cultures, our values are what we have in common. They guide how we work with our clients and each other.

What we live by

The values that make a Checkmate.

Our values are critical to the success and growth of our people. They determine how we communicate, make decisions, and solve problems.

Practice positivity. Master empathy.

Choosing positivity every time and believing that we are always in control of every situation allows us to be effective and a joy to work with. But while positivity is a choice, empathy is a must. At Checkbox, our interactions and decisions start with seeking a deep understanding of context and putting ourselves in the shoes of others.

  1. We always lift each other up and add to the team morale rather than subtract from it.

  2. We take challenges head on and believe that there is always a solution to every problem.

  3. We remain motivated and steady under pressure.

  4. We listen attentively to understand what’s beneath the surface before speaking.

  5. We consider how our actions and decisions impact our customers and our colleagues.

  6. We treat everyone with respect, no exceptions.

No ego. No blame. No bullshit.

Being radically open and direct is a default but is always done constructively, respectfully and thoughtfully. We are humble and place the mission before our ego so that it never gets in the way of success.

  1. We focus on moving the needle and prioritize what is important.

  2. We tell the truth to ourselves and others, and admit our mistakes and shortcomings.

  3. We have humility, and no job that benefits the team is beneath us.

  4. We share our thoughts on important matters, even if it makes us uncomfortable.

  5. We value evidence over assumptions when making decisions.

  6. We question actions inconsistent with our values.

  7. We accept disagreements and prioritize committing to a decision over being right, and do it wholeheartedly.

  8. We frequently give meaningful and constructive feedback, and welcome it back in return.

  9. We ask smart questions instead of acting like we know everything.

Simply first class.

We love “wow” moments. So we’re always thinking about how to get there. We don’t just meet expectations – we exceed them.

  1. We consistently do what we say so our colleagues and customers can rely on us.

  2. We work hard to maximise our talent and deliver outstanding results.

  3. We have relentlessly high standards and continually raise the bar for ourselves and others.

  4. We are diligent and think deeply to produce well-considered outcomes.

  5. We produce excellent work that we are proud of.

  6. We play to win and fight to be the best.

Empowered as a team.

Empowering our people to be autonomous and spark change is important to us. But while we are empowered as individuals, we are aligned collectively and work and play as a team, for the team.

  1. We make time to help others succeed.

  2. We give others the freedom, information and support to make an impact.

  3. We share successes and failures as a team rather than as individuals.

  4. We feel extreme ownership over our work.

  5. We go that extra bit further to make the work of others easier.

  6. We seek opportunities and take initiative to create new value.

  7. We feel responsible for our colleagues, and keep them accountable to be their best even if it’s not what is easiest.

Be bold. Suck less.

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” Taking risks and thinking in unconventional ways propels us forward. We are courageous but calculated. And for the shots we do miss, we continuously learn and recalibrate.

  1. We work fast and get things done quickly.

  2. We reflect frequently and find opportunities for improvement.

  3. We are obsessed with personal and professional development.

  4. We are entrepreneurial and take smart risks even when the outcome is uncertain.

  5. We see lessons in every experience by having a retrospective mindset.
